Patrick Ewing is returning to Georgetown after the university announced on Monday that Ewing will be the new head coach.
He will replace Coach John Thompson III, the son of Ewing’s former coach John Thompson Jr.
Ewing, 54, led the Hoyas to three Final Four appearances and there only national championship (1984). The NBA hall of famer was drafted in 1985 and played 15 out his 17 NBA season with the New York Knicks. Ewing also won two Olympic gold medals, one being for the notorious 92 ‘Dream Team’.
Ewing will leave his position as associate head coach of the Charlotte Hornets to return home to the Georgetown Hoyas.
As the greatest Hoya in the school’s history, Patrick Ewing may be the perfect person to turn the organization around. Georgetown finished 14-18 this season, including a 5-13 record in Big East play.
