Week 16 was of the NFL was plagued with injuries throughout the league that will have a critical impact on the upcoming playoffs. Two key injuries involved star quarterbacks in the AFC.
Tennessee Titans’ quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered a broken fibula in his right leg in a 38-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. After the injury in the third quarter, Mariota had to be carted off of the field. Mariota is scheduled to have surgery on Wednesday with Doctor Robert Anderson in North Carolina.
Derek Carr has led the Oakland Raiders to a 12-3 start and the team has clinched its first playoff berth since 2002. In Saturday’s 33-25 win over the Indianapolis Colts, Carr suffered a broken fibula during fourth quarter. Carr is scheduled to have surgery on Tuesday in LA.
The injury has put a damper on the Raiders’ playoff hopes. Backup quarterback Matt McGloin will have to take over next week as the team heads to Denver to play the Broncos.
Given these critical injuries, you have to wonder should the Dallas Cowboys be cautious and sit quarterback Dak Prescott in Monday’s game against the Detroit Lions. With Prescott as quarterback, the Cowboys have a 12-2 record, clinched the division and home field throughout the playoffs.
With a win tonight, the Lions could be closer to clinching a playoff berth.
